For the stunning red-head Alyssa, it’s on to compete for the title of Miss Universe!

Alyssa Campanella may have been raised a Jersey girl, but she represented the Golden State to take home the crown in the Miss USA 2011 pageant (not to be confused with Miss America!), filmed at the Planet Hollywood Casino in Las Vegas. Alyssa bested first runner up Miss Tennessee Ashley Durham, second runner up Miss Alabama Madeline Mitchell, and third runner up Miss Texas Ana Rodriguez. Alyssa, a full-time model was considered one of the judge’s favorites.

This isn’t the end of the road for our winner — She gets to represent the United States in the Miss Universe pageant Sept. 12 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. That is, of course, if she complies with the very strict rules that apply to any woman holding the Miss USA title.

2010′s Miss America winner, Rima Fakih, 25, who presented Alyssa with her crown, was recently held under scrutiny after she appeared to have been out on an all-night bender. The prestigious title now means living under a microscope since the Tara Conner scandal. The 2006 winner was called out for drug abuse, underage drinking, and sexual indiscretion, but was not stripped of her title.

Nauru UN Refugee Move May Prompt Another Asylum Seekers

Nauru, the world’s smallest island republic and located in micronesia in the South Pacific is fighting to re-open the door for neighboring asylum/refugee seekers. In 2008, the refugee camp on this tiny island closed, taking with it a substantial 10 percent of job opportunities.

Today we learned that “Nauru president Marcus Stephen today signed the instruments of accession to the 1951 convention relating to the status of refugees and its 1967 protocols.”
President Stephen stated: “By signing the convention and its protocols we commit ourselves to the principles set out in the convention.” This brings Nauru closer to securing a deal with the country of Malaysia to swap 800 asylum-seekers for 4000 certified refugees.

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott expressed his contentment with the latest strides stating, “Compared to Julia Gillard’s Malaysian people swap, reopening the Australian taxpayer-funded processing centre in Nauru is humane, cost-effective and proven to work. Julia Gillard has finally run out of excuses. The Prime Minister should pick up the phone to the President of Nauru, reopen the processing centre on the Island and reintroduce temporary protection visas.”

Others differ in opinion. Immigration Minister Chris Bowen voiced his stance by saying, “The Coalition left people to rot on Nauru for long periods of time, and then the great majority resettled and came to Australia anyway, not breaking the people-smuggling model but causing a lot of damage to people along the way.”

Gabrielle Giffords Photos: First Images Of Congresswoman Since Arizona Shooting

PHOENIX (Associated Press) -- The first photos of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords since she was shot in the head in a mass shooting in Tucson about five months ago were released early Sunday.

The photos appeared on her Facebook page.

The Facebook photos, taken May 17 outside her Houston hospital, are the first clear snapshots of Giffords since the shooting five months ago during a constituent meet-and-greet in a Safeway parking lot in Tucson.

The photos showed how far she has come since she was wounded in the left side of her forehead, but her spokeswoman, Pia Carusone, has cautioned that Giffords still has a long way to go in her recovery.

They show the congresswoman outside, the greenery of the hospital lawn in the background. She smiled directly into the camera in one, while in the other she smiled downward as she sat next to her mother, Gloria Giffords.

Giffords has been in a Houston rehab facility since two weeks after the Jan. 8 shooting. Six people were killed and 13 were injured, including Giffords.

Carusone said Friday that Giffords could be released sometime this month.

She said doctors and family are considering "many factors" while making the critical next-step decision to release Giffords from TIRR Memorial Hermann, the hospital where she has been undergoing intensive daily rehabilitation since late January.

"We're looking at before the end of the month. We're looking at early July," Carusone said. "We don't have a date."

But in an interview published this week in the Arizona Republic, Carusone made clear that Giffords remains a shadow of her former self as she has difficulty stringing together sentences and relies heavily on gestures and facial expressions to communicate. She also faces some difficulty in expressing bigger, more complex thoughts, Carusone said.

While Giffords' release from the hospital after five months of intensive inpatient therapy will mark an important step in her recovery, she still must undergo months of outpatient rehabilitation that will include speech, occupational and physical therapy.

Since the shooting, the only time the public has gotten a glimpse of Giffords was April 27 as she boarded a plane to Florida to watch astronaut husband Mark Kelly launch into space. The grainy footage, taken from afar, showed Giffords slowly but purposefully walk up the airplane's stairs.

The newly released photos, shot by Tucson photographer P.K. Weis just before surgery on her skull, provide a much clearer image.

Last month as Kelly was orbiting Earth, doctors repaired Giffords' skull, finally freeing her from wearing a cumbersome protective helmet that her staff members say she hated.

Since the shooting, Giffords has made remarkable strides, requesting her favorite foods, singing her favorite songs, and relearning how to walk and talk, although she struggles to string sentences together.

In an interview with The Arizona Republic published Thursday, Giffords' Chief of Staff Pia Carusone said Giffords' limited speaking ability has led her to rely primarily on facial expressions and hand gestures to communicate.

"She is borrowing upon other ways of communicating. Her words are back more and more now, but she's still using facial expressions as a way to express. Pointing. Gesturing," Carusone said. "Add it all together and she's able to express the basics of what she wants or needs. But, when it comes to a bigger and more complex thought that requires words, that's where she's had the trouble."

Carusone also said that if Giffords' recovery were to plateau now, "it would not be nearly the quality of life she had before."

"All that we can hope for is that she won't plateau today and that she'll keep going and that when she does plateau, it will be at a place far away from here," she said.

Jared Lee Loughner, 22, has pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from the shooting and is being held at a Missouri facility. A judge declared him incompetent to stand trial, but prosecutors hope his competency can be restored so he can answer for the charges.

PREVIOUSLY: Tracy Morgan's latest standup set is no laughing matter.

Kevin Rogers attended Morgan's standup show last Friday and reported on his Facebook page that Morgan let loose a viciously homophobic rant that, as far as he could tell, was a dead serious attack on gay men and women. Rogers, who is gay, wrote:

I figured at some point the gay jokes would fly and I'm well prepared for a good ribbing of straight gay humor. I have very thick skin when it comes to humor; I can dish and I can take. What I can't take is when Mr. Morgan took it upon himself to mention about how he feels all this gay s*it was crazy and that women are a gift from God and that "Born this Way" is bulls*it, gay is a choice, and the reason he knows this is exactly because "God don't make no mistakes" (referring to God not making someone gay cause that would be a mistake).

Perhaps most strikingly, Rogers wrote that Morgan said:

He said if his son that was gay he better come home and talk to him like a man and not [he mimicked a gay, high pitched voice] or he would pull out a knife and stab that little N (one word I refuse to use) to death.

Rogers continued to describe the rant, which we've excerpted:

He took time to visit the bulls*it of this bullying stuff and informed us that the gays needed to quit being pussies and not be whining about something as insignificant as bullying. He mentioned that gay was something kids learn from the media and programming, and that bullied kids should just bust some ass and beat those other little f*ckers that bully them, not whine about it.

After making comments about President Obama, Rogers wrote that Morgan finished his rant defiantly:

Tracy then said he didn't f*cking care if he pissed off some gays, because if they can take a f*cking dick up their ass... they can take a f*cking joke.

As it stands, Morgan's reps refused to comment to gay issues site Unicornbooty.com, writing, "There is no comment, thank you for your inquiry."

The Ryman Auditorium issued a statement to The Hollywood Reporter about the alleged outburst, saying, "The Ryman Auditorium regrets that people were offended by statements made by Tracy Morgan during his June 3 appearance. The Ryman does not control the content presented by people appearing on its stage, nor does it endorse any of the views of, or statements made by, such persons."

Morgan has a history of homophobic tirades on stage, saying that being gay was a choice, among other things, at a 2009 standup performance at New York's Carnegie Hall.

In his acting career, however, Morgan has often played gay or at least sexually ambiguous. He played a transvestite inmate in the Adam Sandler comedy, "The Longest Yard," and many of his "Saturday Night Live" characters were of questionable sexuality, including the sophomoric zookeeper Brian Fellows.

Burien Teen Marta Stahlfeld Publishes Fantasy Book; Book Signing June 18th

Seventeen-year old Burien-native Marta Stahlfeld has authored and published “Darkwoods,” a 275-page book that is the first in a new epic fantasy series for teens and preteens.

Marta will be holding a local book signing also, on Saturday, June 18th from 1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. at Burien Books, located at 824 SW 152nd Street.

Like many other popular teen series, all the characters in Darkwoods are animals, though they display very human-like strengths and weaknesses. “Darkwoods” is available at local bookstores, including Barnes & Noble locations, and is also available in print and eBook versions online.

“I have always loved fantastic stories,” Stahlfeld said. “Reading for me is a way to travel to different worlds and different times, and to have adventures I could never have on my own. If my stories can hook another kid on reading like I got hooked, that would be great!”

Stahlfeld has already completed the next book in the series. “I’ve outlined six books, but I really like the characters, so there may be more,” laughs Stahlfeld.

The series begins with the Foxes leaving their home in Darkwoods, determined to conquer the world. Standing in their way is Princess Zuryzel of the Wraith Mice, with the ability to fade undetected into the shadows, and her allies among the Squirrel Tribes, Ranger Mice, and River Otters.

Like any good epic tale, Darkwoods includes battles, romance, and treachery, as well as the heroism necessary to defeat evil. But Stahlfeld was careful to craft her tale without gory battle details or language inappropriate for her audience. “Good books don’t need that kind of thing,” says Stahlfeld.

Stahlfeld just finished her junior year in high school and plans on majoring in English Literature or History when she starts college in 18 months. In fact, the Ranger Mice of “Darkwoods” were inspired by the U.S. Army Rangers who scaled Pointe du Hoc on D-Day, which she visted on the 4th of July. It was shortly after that day when she began writing “Darkwoods.”

We conducted the following interview with Marta via email:

Q: What high school do you go to?
A: I actually attend a private Lutheran high school in Des Moines, Evergreen Lutheran High School. I just finished up my last final of my Junior year last Friday, and have one more year to go. Before that, I attended Seattle Christian Schools in SeaTac.

Q: Do you still live here?
A: Yes, we live in the Shorewood area, in north Burien. We’ve lived here in the same house all my life. Both my parents are attorneys. My dad has his own office in Burien (Eric Stahlfeld), and my mother works in downtown Seattle. I have a younger brother, Karl, who is just finishing up 8th grade at Seattle Christian Schools. He plays baseball for RIPS Brewers (Des Moines Memorial Drive) and also plays the bagpipes – you can probably hear him at your offices when he practices, they are VERY loud. We also have a cat — Leonidas, or Leo for short.

Q: Were there any teachers in particular who helped you out?
A: Susan Seig, my Language Arts teacher at Seattle Christian, and Cheryl Knight, the secondary school librarian for Seattle Christian, both helped my in early editing of the book and were very encouraging to me.

Q: How long have you been writing?
A: When I was seven years old, I won a blank book in a bean bag toss at a neighborhood festival. I was kind of disgusted at first — it didn’t seem like much of a prize to me! But my mom challenged me to write a story in it, and so I did. That’s the first story I remember writing, and I wrote short stories in it and other blank books or notebooks on and off over the years after that.

I started writing Darkwoods when I was 12. I have the next book in the series done and ready for editing (title: Pasadagavra), and I’m working on the third book now (working title: Graystone). I also have other stories I’m working on.

Q: What inspired this book?
A: In 2006, my family took a trip to Europe. During some of the down time while traveling (sitting on planes, trains, etc.), the vague idea of a story of quiet little animals defending themselves against attacking animals rolled around in my head. But it wasn’t until we visited the Normandy Beaches on the 4th of July that I began getting some concrete ideas for the characters. The first place on the tour that we stopped at was Pointe du Hoc where the U.S. Army Rangers scaled that huge cliff, under fire, and then fought when they reached the top. I was amazed as I listened to the guide telling us what happened and looking down that cliff! How could anyone do that? But as we continued in the tour and learned more about what happened there on D-Day, I thought about it and I realized that people can do impossible things when they have to, and they can rise to be leaders when the need is there. That’s where I got the inspiration for my Ranger Mice characters — they are well-trained warriors because they have to be, but they are also brave and come to help the other creatures defend their home from the foxes because they know its the right thing to do. When we got home from the trip, I began writing down the story.

My Ranger Mice characters are not, of course, really like the amazing U.S. Army Rangers who scaled Pointe du Hoc – they are just characters in a book. But I did try to capture the bravery and dedication of the U.S. Army Rangers in my story.

Why animal characters? I had read a lot of Brian Jacques, author of the Redwall series, and enjoyed his animal characters. Its fun to write about the characters as if they are human then throw in a phrase like, “On the other paw,…”

Q: What authors inspire you?
A: Brian Jacques (Redwall series), Erin Hunter (Warrior series), J.R.R. Tolkein (Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit), and of course, J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series — in fact, I’m rereading those books now.

I would also have to say that knowing that Christopher Paolini wrote and published Eragon when he was younger than 18 years old helped me realize that just because I was a teenager, there was no reason I couldn’t get my book finished and published, too.

Q: What’s next for you?
A: Immediately? The dance performances for Momentum Dance Academy on Friday — I do Irish, Contemporary, and Jazz dance. I’m also visiting bookstores this summer to set up book signing dates.

In writing, I need to get Pasadagavra edited and then published, and otherwise keep working on the next books in the series.

Otherwise, I’m going to finish up high school next year and head off to college. My primary career goal is to be a novelist, but I am also interested in teaching — sharing with teens and/or preteens, either through books or school or whatever, is something I really enjoy. I’ve been tutoring a fifth grade student this year, and that has been very rewarding. I plan to major in English Literature or History in college, and then get an advanced degree for teaching.

Q: Anything else you want to add?
A: I want to really encourage kids to read. If a kid doesn’t like fantasy books like mine, that’s okay, there are lots of other kinds of books out there for kids at all age levels. Books open up the world (or in some cases other worlds!) for the reader and can help the reader learn about other places, what motivates people, etc. And sometimes it just provides a fun escape from boredom on a rainy day, a not uncommon occurence around here…. Books may take a little more work than video games or movies (both of which I also like) because you have to use your imagination more, but that’s what makes them so great: you get to imagine what a character looks like, and the buildings, etc. A good book is like a friend that you can revisit over and over again.

Solar Flare Video: Nasa Footage Of Spectacular Eruption On The Sun

Yesterday morning, a massive eruption occurred on the sun, producing a solar flare and explosion of high energy particles.

NASA later released footage of the spectacle, described by the Geeked on Goddard blog as being "like a fountain of plasma that blasts out of the solar surface, spreads outward, and collapses to splat back down." The video shows darker, relatively cool material splashing back onto the sun's surface as it's drawn in by the star's intense magnetic pull.

For anyone concerned about the potential radiation that occurs from a natural occurrence of the sort, the Atlantic Wire reports that because of the sun's current positioning, the radiation should not have a significant effect when it reaches the earth Wednesday or Thursday.

As NASA scientist C. Alex Young put it, "It's not necessarily anything spectacular as far as space weather ... it's just really, really beautiful."

Boston's 2011 MLB Draft Order

The Red Sox will have four of the first 40 picks in the 2011 MLB draft, allowing them to restock the farm with high-quality prospects early and often, despite their recent success on the field. While the draft is meant to reward teams who perform poorly, in order to allow them first crack at the best potential baseball players that high school and college has to offer, the compensation system in free agency allows teams like the Red Sox to stockpile picks when their players leave.

Because of this, the Red Sox, despite not having a single pick of their own--they lost their first rounder to the Rays by signing Carl Crawford to a seven-year, $142 million contract this winter--still get four spots in the top 40. They lost Victor Martinez, giving them Detroit's first rounder in the #19 spot and also lost Adrian Beltre to the Texas Rangers, giving them the #26 pick in the draft.

For Type-A free agents--both Martinez and Beltre fit this category--the teams who lost the player also earn an additional compensation pick, at no cost to the team that signed the free agent. So, Boston also gets a bonus, or sandwich round, pick for both Martinez and Beltre. These come in at #36 and #40, respectively.

Some legitimately great prospects can be found in the sandwich round. Last year, the Red Sox selected Bryce Brentz and Anthony Ranaudo with their pair of sandwich picks, at #36 and #39, respectively. Sometimes players who fell out of the first round due to a poor spring or significant bonus demands are picked up in the sandwich round, and because of Boston's wallet (and a group of scouts that have done an excellent job under Theo Epstein and Co.) they are often scooped up by a team like the Sox.

The sandwich picks don't always work out, of course. The last time Boston had a pair of compensation picks in the sandwich round before 2010 was in 2007, when they selected Nick Hagadone and Ryan Dent. Hagadone was packaged in the Victor Martinez trade--you could argue his being good enough to be moved in that deal was a win--but Dent is 22 years old and has hit all of .225/.306/.346 in his five years of pro ball.

The draft is essentially a lottery. The more tickets the Red Sox have to play, the better the chances are that they will hit on one of them. Having four picks in the first round this year gives them four chances to succeed, when there are many teams who just have the one chance, or maybe even no chance. Since today is a day for optimism, we'll leave it at that.

Andrew Breitbart Takes Over Anthony Weiner's Press Conference (VIDEO)

NEW YORK -- On Monday afternoon, in the Sheraton Hotel's New York West ballroom, it felt, at times, like there were two press conferences happening at once. One featured the spectacle of a teary-eyed and emotionally wrenched Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) apologizing for his online indiscretions. The other showcased a combative Andrew Breitbart doing his best to hijack the moment.

The conservative media provocateur spoke before, after and during Rep. Weiner's admission of sending sexually charged emails to six different women.

It was supposed to be Weiner's press conference -- so why was Breitbart on the stage? He had decided to attend, he told the scores of assembled press corps members, partly because his hotel was "coincidentally" located three blocks away.

But, Breitbart also noted, "I'm here to watch myself be vindicated." He attempted to turn Weiner's press conference into a battle in his ongoing war against the so-called mainstream media, criticizing outlets that included Salon and The Daily Kos.

No one from Weiner's office pre-screened the press at the sometimes-chaotic news conference, which was held with about an hour's advance notice. At one point, before Weiner had taken the stage, someone from the crowd -- it was difficult to tell if they were a member of the media or just an onlooker -- asked Breitbart to break from a press huddle he was holding on the side of the ballroom and walk up to the podium at the front of the room set aside for Weiner.

"If he's paying for this I find this to be a tad rude," Breitbart said, and then went ahead, at 3:58 p.m.

Weiner had scheduled his conference to start at 4 p.m. When people tuned in, though, they saw not the Congressman, but Breitbart, who took questions for approximately 13 minutes before leaving the podium. Fox News reported that Weiner's aides ran down the hall to inform him that Breitbart was there.

Breitbart defended Big Government's reporting on Weiner, as well as on past stories, saying his website "didn't get into conjecture."

He expressed particular ire toward the online magazine Salon, and claimed that Weiner was "complicit" in a media campaign blaming Breitbart for the whole debacle -- and thus owed the media entrepreneur an apology.

"Given the fact that Congressman Weiner made much of last week about trying to blame me, and much of the left-wing media tried to make last week about blaming me, including claiming that I outed the name of the girl in Seattle that he sent the tweet to, which is false, and also claiming that I was the hacker, I felt that I needed to set the record straight," he told Fox News in a phone interview.

Aside from personal vindication, Breitbart said on the stage, "I'm doing this to save his family, okay? And if this guy wants to start fighting with me again, I have this photo."

Breitbart was referring to an X-rated photo of Weiner that he purportedly has in his possession yet refrained from publishing Monday. Someone from the gaggle asked Breitbart if he was extorting the congressman, and he denied that he was.

After a few more minutes, Breitbart left the podium. He filtered into and out of the ballroom, taking calls and talking to a number of media outlets.

Once Weiner had taken the stage, he was soon asked whether he owed Breitbart an apology. He delivered one, after some prodding, but Breitbart apparently wasn't satisfied.

"I'm right here," Breitbart said. Weiner did not engage, and Breitbart walked to the back of the room for more interviews.

He was still standing there, speaking with Inside Edition, as Weiner choked up again, toward the end of his press conference, over the pain he had caused his wife and family.

A week after claiming a hacker had posted a lewd photo to his Twitter account, U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner on Monday apologized for lying about the ordeal and admitting carrying on inappropriate relationships with several women he'd met online.

TV's Joel McHale riffing with Rifftrax on Red Dawn

Actor, comedian and classically trained suit wearer Joel McHale has taken his talent for riffing to the next level.

The star of The Soup and the upcoming NBC sitcom Community has joined forces with Michael J. Nelson's Rifftrax.com to provide a running comedy commentary for the perennial craptastic 80s classic Red Dawn. Nelson announced the guest commentary on the Rifftrax site and his Twitter blog earlier this week.

Rifftrax, for those who may not be familiar with the site and are therefore in no way cool, is the comedy website that provides downloadable MP3s of funny movie commentaries featuring the voices and talents of the minds behind Mystery Science Theater 3000 including Nelson, Bill Corbett and Kevin Murphy. It is the only reason I still own all three Matrix films, that and the fact that my desk is missing part of a leg.

Neither McHale or Nelson have spilled many details as to why they chose to riff on Red Dawn, other than the fact that it sucks harder than Larry King trying to obtain the last ounce of life from an orphan baby. Seriously, if you have not seen it, keep it that way. Your eyes will thank you if they could talk. And if they can't, they will eventually find a way to learn so they can personally thank you.

I'm just curious to know the connection between Nelson's special guest and the film, other than the possibilities for picking the film apart are more promising than Joel Hodgson at a Roger Corman film festival.

Past celebrity riffs have tried to fit the film to the guest such as legendary lounge lizard Richard Cheese's guest riff on Ocean's Eleven and comedy musician "Weird Al" Yankovic's assault on the original Jurassic Park. I would have pegged McHale to take on Paris Hilton's ear-stopping performance in The Hottie and the Nottie or Lindsey Lohan's last unwatchable dreck (take your pick). Then again, I would have to own either of these films in order to enjoy Nelson and McHale's commentary, so I should just count my blessings and clear the rest of this week's schedule to make the time to count that high.
